Pierre Bourdieu argued that society is structured around three interrelated forms of capital—economic, cultural and social—and that each can be transformed into the others through a process of conversion that depends on the specific field and the relative conversion rates that exist at a given time. Cultural capital, which he distinguished into embodied (habits, skills, dispositions), objectified (cultural goods such as books or artworks) and institutionalized (degrees and credentials) forms, can be leveraged to obtain economic capital when, for example, a qualification is recognized by the labour market and yields higher earnings, and it can also be exchanged for social capital when cultural fluency facilitates entry into elite networks. Conversely, economic capital can be invested to acquire cultural capital (paying for education, cultural experiences) or to expand social capital (joining clubs, sponsoring relationships), while social capital—networks of obligations and trust—can be mobilized to gain economic benefits (job referrals, business opportunities) or to legitimize cultural assets. Bourdieu emphasized that these conversions are not automatic; they require a minimum degree of reversibility and are conditioned by the holder’s existing levels of each capital, meaning that the possession of one form can boost or limit the effectiveness of another in a given context.
